It is beleived he had a good eye at pickin brood bitches that usually produced pretty good. He was not a OFRN die hard but used a few and later directed his attention away from them due to size. To big for him. Lightner's Topsey [Colby} was a dog chosen for Lightner by John Colby to breed to his Masterson Jack dog. Lightner's Vick an offspring of that breeding and also a 4th generation ancestor to Ferguson's Centipede. Lightner's Vick appears 10X in 10 generation pedigree. Some use this breeding formula to substantiate the original OFRN foundation. Ferguson's Centipede is also found 4th generation Sander's Satan. Geronimo X Red Dixie [Hemphill] brother / sister breeding through Sander's Satan and Hemphill's Rebel is a very tight retainer of the OFRN through this strain. Lightner, Bourgeois, Hemphill, McClintock,Wallace, Clouse, Owens, Harvey, Colby were men who bred for game first. Other traits never superceded game. What we see today is not from those days. William Lightner was a great breeder and keeper of pit dogs, Lightner dogs were of great value because of what they represented....game pit dogs.
