Apparently now it is even more accessible - "The Most Dismal Times: The Diary of William Rowbottom, 1787-1830" is online. At http://www.spinningtheweb.org.uk, search for rowbottom. The introduction to the diary gives some family information.

The diary writer is a weaver living at Burnley Lane, Oldham, married to Ann, with children baptized in Oldham St Marys 1778 - 1893, most of these listed in the IGI.

The same web site also mentions a second William Robottom: founder of the "earliest known machineshop in Oldham" "started in 1797" (from the 1918 "Oldham Commercial Year Book"). Can I presume that this is the other William Rowbottom in the Oldham IGI, married to Betty, with children baptized in Oldham St Marys 1785 - 1801? Their youngest is yet another William Rowbottom, baptized in 1801.

This youngest William Rowbottom is on my short list of possible ancesters. I am searching for a William Rowbotham born about 1802 who married Mary (Dalton?), had children baptized at Manchester Cathedral 1827-1839, and worked as a machine-maker and mechanic. Is there a way to rule this match in or out?
