Looking at this for a friend of my husband's. He believes his grandfather's name was Fred and he came from Manchester. I have still to locate Fred, but this friend also tells me that his uncle did some research and uncovered some connection with Jamaica. As Ashton is virtually Manchester (probably within Greater Manchester these days) I wonder whether it is worth having a chat.
