Subject: A new recruit

Since stumbling onto this site I have found it to be of great personal interest, in more ways than one.
However, there is no mention of the 'Banbury' faction of this steadfast tribe.
It is recorded that a Joseph Rowbotham was whipped 3 times for stealing in 1907, and fined three shillings and sixpence for throwing stones in 1910 (other members of his family fared less well with authority during that period). Nonetheless, our Joe went on to serve with the 2nd Bucks & Oxon Light Infantry, eventually being awarded the George Medal (no mean feat in those hard days I should imagine).
I am keen to find out more about this particular branch of the Rowbothams - I see that William, George and John are common Rowbotham christian names from way back (a tradition that has been retained within my direct family) but what about Bryant? Apparently I am one of the few named after him - my dear Mother told me she spelt it wrong on the birth certificate. Us children allways thought it was because she spelt it with a 'y' and not an 'i' but it appears that a family grave was discoverd in a Banbury cemetery with 'Bryant' on the headstone. We now think that the absent 't' is the spelling mistake - our extremely lovely Mother and dear Father have long been dead, so we can't ask them!

Evidently, the 'Banbury breakaway group' produced a few offspring so hopefully some information will turn up - anything pertinent will be gratefully received.

Kindest regards to all you Rowy's.

Bryan N. Rowbotham
(Born 1940 Loughborough in Leicestershire)
