Instead of taking Samantha to a typical movie where teenagers would be necking and fondling each other in the confines of the dark and uncomfortable movie theatre, Justin took her to the only drive-in in Millington where they could both be alone, be comfortable and watch a good movie without being too close. The Mill was going to be showing a few foreign films that Justin had never even heard of before but figured that Samantha might enjoy being that she seemed to be so cultured.

The first was not a foreign film but a independent film by the American director Quentin Tarrentino called ‘Four Rooms’. It was a comedy about four completely different scenarios on New Years Eve connected by a bus boy at the hotel played expertly by Tim Roth. The first skit was about a coven of witches trying to bring their virgin goddess back to life. Each witch has to bring a sacrifice to the alter.

One brings milk from a woman’s breast, another brings sweat from ten men, the third brings a years worth of tears, the fourth (played convincingly by Madonna) brings blood of a virgin and the last virgin was supposed to bring sperm but came up empty handed. And while the coven is moaning at the bubbling cauldron, she explains (in rhyme) that instead of filling up a cup with sperm, she accidentally swallowed it. Both Samantha and Justin roared with laughter with the rest of the scarcely populated drive-in. And while the witches were so angry, they started to breathe fire, Justin and Samantha sat in their seats, clenching their stomach’s painfully, trying to catch their breaths.

The second story was about a married couple who are having such marital problems that when Tim Roth comes to bring them ice (which was brought to the wrong room) he ends up being sucked into a weird twisted sexual ploy between the husband who is in his underwear and toting a revolver and a wife who is tied up and gagged. Each time poor Ted (Tim Roth) tries to escape, they pull him in deeper until the wife lies and says that she and Ted were having an affair and began talking about how huge his dick is. And when the husband is on the floor squeezing his ears so he can’t hear her, the wife starts saying every slang term in the book used to describe the male erection. Justin looked to his right to see Samantha’s eyes widening to the size of saucers as this woman continued for a good forty five seconds (without breath) and this in itself made Justin roar with laughter.

Throughout the two hours the movie ran, Samantha and Justin couldn’t stop laughing. Forgotten were the apprehensions that both had felt earlier that day. They were simply two people enjoying a really funny movie together. During the intermission before the second movie, a French drama called Indochine, Samantha volunteered to go get them soda and some popcorn. While she was gone, Justin sat back in his car seat and reflected on how the date had gone so far. She was clearly enjoying his choice in movie, she couldn’t stop laughing. Which was a good thing as far as Justin was concerned because her eyes lit up each time her mouth stretched into a smile. Although they weren’t as close as Justin would have liked…for he had an impulse to put her arm around her shoulders, he chose the drive in AND his sisters’ car because it kept them a safe distance apart. He knew that she wouldn’t be as comfortable as she is now if he’d taken his SUV. When she came back with a large tub of buttery popcorn and one huge drink with two straws in it, he smiled and held the door open for her.

“Oh my God, Justin, I’m having such a great time” Samantha said settling back into her seat “That movie was fucking hilarious! I’ve never seen anything like it before”

“I had heard about it but I had never seen it. It was funny wasn’t it?”

“Hell yes! Especially the part where Ted actually cut the guys pinkie off. I didn’t think he was going to do it. That was classic” Justin chuckled suddenly aware of how comfortable she had become around him. She was slumped in the seat next to him, taking handfuls of popcorn into her mouth without giving it a second thought “What’s next?”

“Indochine. A French Drama. It’s about three hours long all in subtitles.. Are you up for it?” Samantha smiled broadly

“Yeah. I think I’ve laughed as much as I need to. If I laugh anymore, we might have to make a pit stop for diapers because I just might pee my pants” Justin laughed loudly shaking his head “How did you know I liked Independent films?”

“I didn’t” Justin shrugged “I just went on a hunch. Besides, I wasn’t really in the mood to see anything normal. I thought I’d be different”

“Well, thank you. I’m having so much fun” Samantha said stretching her body to his side of the car and giving him a quick peck on the cheek “I’ll never forget this”

While Samantha began to watch the opening credits of Indochine, he couldn’t stop thinking about how good her lips on his cheek had felt. He wanted to touch the spot with the back of his hand, but resisted the urge. He didn’t want to seem too soft on the first date. Besides, as long as the movie kept him engaged, he wouldn’t think about how he really wanted to kiss her lips.

Unfortunately for them both, Justin hadn’t counted on the numerous brazen sex scene’s throughout the entire film. While some were very mild and only slightly suggestive, others were blatant, nude and very steamy. He kept himself thinking nonchalant thoughts when he approached each sex scene. When he sneaked a glance at Samantha, she saw that she was engrossed in the film from a professional point of view…even during the sex. The cinematography, after all, was spectacular and had won several awards at Cannes Film Festival because of it. Her eyes were bright with wonder as each challenging camera angle was exploited with the perfect amount of light.

However, unbeknownst to Justin, Samantha was affected by these scenes. She, unlike Justin, could look at it from a professional point of view. But that scapegoat only last for so long. As the movie progressed, the sex scenes became more heated as they intertwined the love triangle between a French Soldier, a young Vietnamese girl who could have been no more than sixteen and her adoptive French mother. The beautiful scenery in the film gave it a surely romantic backdrop but also a dangerous one because it was set in the time when the Vietnamese were trying to fight for their independence from the still Imperialistic France. All in all, it was a wonderful movie, the sex scenes were just…sometimes a little unbearable.

But there had been one scene in particular where the French soldier was in a bar with all of his friends and the very dignified mother comes to him, begging for him. He rebuffs her and sends her on her way, telling her what a disgrace she’s making of herself. That the woman that he knew would NEVER beg for a man. But the poor woman is so lost in her desire for him that she cannot see that she’s really making a fool out of herself. When the soldier finally shoves her off for the last time, she retreats to her car where her driver is waiting to take her back to her large plantation house. Before they can drive off, the soldier comes running out of the bar in the rain and they have hot slowly sweaty angry sex in the backseat of the car while the driver waits outside under an umbrella.

This scene threw Samantha so far back that she literally could feel herself crossing and re-crossing her legs several times. Her skin was suddenly damp with the humidity in the air because there was no more wind to give her aid and since the top was down on the convertible, there was no point in air conditioning. In retrospect, she wanted to look to her left, to see how Justin was handling the film…but she was too afraid that she’d look at him…feel that heat that she’d felt for him in the foyer of his house…and she’d kiss him. Which for her, would completely spoil the date. So, Samantha simply kept crossing her legs, hoping that her apparent stirring wasn’t as evident to Justin.

But Justin was having problems of his own. It wasn’t so much from the movie, although it had been quite…jarring. His stirring came from watching Samantha’s long legs cross and re-cross for fifteen minutes straight. He watched her shift her body from one side of the seat to the other…then he watched her wring her hands for a while. He found this all very adorable. But Samantha’s body was so provocative, that he couldn’t help but imagining taking her to the backseat.

When the movie ended, Samantha was in tears. The love story…the love triangle had not only ended badly, nobody was happy in the end and the soldier killed himself. The mother and the adoptive daughter along with her child by the soldier, ended up going their separate ways. And in the backdrop of all of that…in the end…the country was still in turmoil although Samantha wished and wished that by the end of the movie, all struggles would be over.

“Are you crying?” Samantha asked Justin through her tears

“No…” he said looking to his left before putting a finger to his eye harshly “I have something in my eye” Samantha
smiled and nudged his shoulders

“You’re crying, admit it”

“I. Have. Something. In. My. Eye.” Justin said through gritted teeth

“Sure”

* * * *

Driving along the brick roads of downtown Millington with the wind whipping through Samantha’s hair, she felt high. She was having one of the best dates that she’d ever had in her life. Justin had been such a gentleman throughout the five hours they’d spent at the drive in, never even putting his arm around her or asking for any kind of physical closeness. For this, she was appreciative. Samantha wasn’t sure she was quite ready for either of them to make any moves.

But now, riding back to his secret dinner destination, she felt like she wanted to kiss him. The simplicity in which he was handling things warmed her heart. As he’d promised, there had been no pressure. Even during the sexiest part of the movie, he hadn’t himself with utmost dignity. God and she knew for her part that it was hard to keep her hands off of him. He looked so good with the crescent moon light shining on his face. His eyes were soft but attentive to her every minute she talked to him. One thing was for certain, Justin knew how to treat a woman.

“So, where are we going now?”

“Back to my house…kind of” Justin said smiling at the picnic he’d planned thanks to Sonali’s idea “Don’t worry. It doesn’t involve me seducing you” Samantha smiled and pushed a lock of her from her face

“I don’t think you could seduce me” Samantha lied. If she were honest with him and herself, then she’d tell him to take her back to his place and tie her up to his bed

“Hmm…I’ll keep that in mind”

And the subject, however little addressed, was dropped. Samantha quickly started talking about how much she enjoyed the movie and recommended other independent and foreign films that she’d thought he’d like. The whole way back to his house, she did most of the talking. She talked a lot about her love of photography and her personal views on things but talked very little about her past or her job. The air of mystery that she wasn’t intending to provide was working on him. She wasn’t willingly volunteering her skeletons and this showed that she was a caring individual. If her scars were great then she didn't want to burden him with worrying about her.

Which was right in one respect but in another respect, she just didn’t feel like explaining to him why she left home or why she became or stripper. It would take too long and way too much energy and she honestly didn’t expect him to understand her motives for doing anything. Most people didn’t. She did however tell him all about Nichole and how they met in college. He asked her why she never went to any of his concerts.

“Do you know how much an *NSYNC concert costs?” she asked with a teasing smile

But he knew that the real answer was that she didn’t really like his music all that much. She did however, admit to buying a few of his CD’s and that she liked the Celebrity album the best. This made him grin proudly. But what was more was how casually she talked about liking his music. It hadn’t changed her life, it hadn’t made her pain any easier, for her heart belonged to Richard Marx, he found out, but it had simply been good music to listen to. And that was enough to satisfy him.

Finally pulling into his driveway, Samantha sat in the car and watched as he pulled out a blanket, a picnic basket and a cooler from the trunk. She suddenly felt shy when he opened her door while balancing all the food in his arms. As soon as she was out of the car though, without asking, she took the blanket and the cooler, leaving him with his picnic basket. When she asked him again what they were going to do, he grinned and pointed towards the woods behind Nichole’s house. Samantha looked at him with a pleased smile before walking slowly towards the softly lit area.

It was after midnight when they finally settled on the pier of the lagoon. Although it wasn’t as scenic as the night she first went there, there was still enough light for them to see each other and their surroundings, for Justin had come prepared with plenty of candles. For once, she took a subservient role and let him do most of the work, lighting the candles around the blanket he laid out and emptying the contents of the basket.

“Hope you’re hungry” he said taking out a large plastic container

“I’m famished. I hope you made enough food because I can certainly eat a lot”

“I made plenty. Do you drink?” he joked silently about the day they met where she had knocked back half a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea

“Occasionally” she said smiling at the memory as she picked up the bottle of wine he’d brought “California Red. I like it”

“Good. I’m crap at picking wines but I called a friend who is an avid wine drinker. He suggested California red”

“Choosing the correct wine is easy” Samantha said as she watched him pop the cork easily “There’s a wine for each type of food. Like red wine with beef, white with chicken and fish…although a blush is best with chicken. If it’s a dry blush then it really brings out the flavor. Champagne isn’t really an everyday drink but you can make spritzers with it. A nice barrel fermented wine is best with dessert. Me personally, I like White Zinfandel after dessert”

“Where did you learn that?” Justin asked looking at her with wonderment clearly shining in his eyes “No twenty-two year old should be a connoswer” Samantha giggled before shaking her head sympathetically

“You mean ‘connoisseur’” he nodded and poured two glasses “And in my family, if you don’t know your wines by fifteen, you’re in big trouble”

“Why is it so important to know wines?” Justin prodded gently

“Well” Samantha said feeling too comfortable to guard herself “If you’re a woman then sixteen is the year for your coming out party where you have to choose from a wine list, the right wine for your table. It makes the family look bad if you don’t know which wine goes with what. You pretty much learn all of this in the etiquette”

“That’s how you grew up?”

“That’s how I grew up. Needless to say, I didn’t like it too much. While some of what my family taught me, stayed with me, I can honestly say, that I didn’t enjoy my upbringing”

“Why not?”

“Well…” Samantha said with a sigh “There are lots of reasons. All of them pointing to the fact that my future was planned the day my family saw that I was a girl. I was to grow up educated well, go to college, meet a nice black medical student and have children so I could carry on the legacy of doctors and lawyers”

“Is that why you went to Florida?” Justin said setting out the food “Your parents probably didn’t like that” Samantha sighed and looked out across the lagoon

“I wouldn’t know, I left the day of my graduation”

“Just like that?’

“Just like that. I didn’t tell them when I was leaving; I didn’t tell them where I was going. I just left and never looked back and I hoped that I’d never have to go crawling back to them” Samantha looked up at Justin’s shocked eyes “I know that seems a bit drastic. But…I just…I felt trapped. I felt like I was dead inside, you know? Like I wasn’t really a person. I was just…a vehicle that my parents was driving to carry out their plans. It wasn’t until I lived on my own in Florida that I really knew what living was all about. It doesn’t matter…money. It really doesn’t. What matters above all is that you can provide for yourself and that you’re happy”

“And are you happy now?” Justin asked looking into her hazel eyes

“I’m happy now. At this moment, I feel happier than I have in a very long time”

“Thank you for letting me make you happy. That’s one of the best compliments that I’ve ever gotten” he scooted a little nearer to her and took her hand into his, wrapping his long fingers around her tiny hand before piercing her gently with his cobalt eyes that seemed to glow from the candles that surrounded them “I’d like to kiss you. Would that be okay?”

And Samantha had a decision to make. If she allowed him to kiss her, then her feelings would begin to change. She didn’t kiss anybody that she didn’t like and she knew that kissing him would mean opening up and lies would no longer be an option for her. Samantha would have to make herself vulnerable to hurt and vulnerable to hurting him. She would have to tell him everything about her the life she led and allow him to take it as he would. But surprisingly, all of this didn’t seem so big now. It all didn’t seem so important. All that mattered to Samantha was this moment in which she felt as if she could really like Justin. So she made her decision quickly.

“I’d really like it if you would” she said meeting his gaze head on

He stretched across the closed containers of food and cupped her cheek gently in his hand, stroking her full lips with his large thumb. Samantha closed her eyes, taking the eyes that Justin liked so much away from him for only an instant before opening her eyes again, letting him see the vulnerability in them. She leaned in a little closer to him and placed her hand gently on his chest. He licked his lips quickly before pressing them gently against hers. Samantha inhaled sharply through her nose as she felt his mouth open slightly, inviting her to deepen the kiss. Shyly, she let her tongue slide into mouth to massage gently with his.

Beneath Samantha, she could feel her toes tingling as if they were near fire although she knew that they were nowhere near the candles. Justin, he was concentrating on controlling his urge to run his hands through her hair, the last thing he wanted was to frighten her away. He knew that already she had shared a lot more than she shared with people she hadn’t known for a long time and kissing her was a privilege that only special men got. He knew this because her kissing was not as expert as his. She was clearly letting him control how far he went, trusting that he wouldn’t push her too far to where she’d force him to stop.

But neither wanted the kiss to end, so they just kept at the pace they were going, breathing slowly through their noses. They let this innocent kiss of new beginnings linger, exploring the new feelings of how they react to each other. Samantha wished as she wrapped her hands around Justin’s neck, that there was music to accompany such a wonderful moment…but the night sounds of the crickets and wind skipping against the water was music enough for them to keep the rhythm of their kisses.

With regret coursing through his veins, Justin pulled away first, letting his lips linger against hers for a few seconds, before pulling away completely too look into her eyes. God, they were so innocent. Like they had never seen a day of a man’s hunger. But, he knew better. Samantha had not gotten to be a wise twenty-one year old woman without seeing the bad side of men. But, fortunately for Justin, she didn’t hold her experiences against him.

They sat staring at each other for almost a minute, unwilling to ruin their perfect moment with words that really didn’t need to be spoken anyway. But unfortunately, their food was getting cold and Justin and Samantha were both really hungry after watching five hours worth of movies. So, Justin straightened his body back up and let her take her hand away from his. She looked down at the food and smiled with an unintentionally dreamy sigh.

“So…what’s for dinner?”
