CHAPTER 85

Michael stared at the gas pump and watched the numbers fly by, his mind elsewhere. He should have felt happy or at least relieved. Weren’t things looking up?

Providing an alive Cassandra would remove the murder charge. As for the kidnapping charge, Tony had a video tape as well as adequate documentation to remove that as well.

A shift in the air caught his attention, followed by a flash of light in the distance. Rain. The air was heavy with it. Before, he’d been too preoccupied to notice.

Fifty-two seventy. Fifty-two eighty. Fifty-two ninty. He topped off the tank at $53.04 and replaced the hose. That should be enough to take them the rest of the way. He opened the car door and looked toward his wife.

She was gone.

He stared at the empty seat. Felt an unexpected smile tug at the corner of his mouth. She had spunk. He had to give her that. Yes, the game most definitely was afoot.

Niki flinched at the clap of distant thunder. Maybe she should turn back. Getting wet was not part of her plan. What plan! Michael would be furious, of course. But what could he do to her?

Several unpleasant images flashed across her mind. She felt a slight shiver. Oh, well. A little water never hurt anyone.

She trudged deeper into the woods. An occasional shaft of moonlight peeked around the gathering clouds and revealed her surroundings. The ground ahead inclined sharply into a narrow creek bed. Was it dry? If it were, the nearing claps of thunder told her it wouldn’t be for long.

By the time she found a crossing point the first droplets were beginning to fall through the leaves. The musty odor of rotting leaves told her that the stream was active even before she sunk her shoe into the mud and stuck. Damn! She didn’t have time for this.

If she didn’t make it up the other side of the hill before the rain hit, the wet leaves would make her climb next to impossible. She worked her shoe loose from the mud and started up the hill as quickly as she dared. She was about halfway up when she heard it.

A small sound really. Behind her. A twig snapped in the leaves. She froze. Had Michael caught up to her already?
