Chapter 89
Tony banded his arms around Cassandra and dug in his heels. She was a strong woman -- almost as tall as him and strong, despite her trim figure.
“Might as well save your strength, Cassie. You’re not going anywhere -- at least not just yet.”
“Don’t call me that. My name is Cassandra.”
Her retort was vigorous, but to his surprise, she stopped struggling.
“Cassie suits you. Didn’t anyone ever call you that before?”
“Yes, once.”
Her guarded reply warned him not to push the issue -- a challenge he couldn’t resist.
“Someone who cared a great deal for you, I presume. Maybe someone you cared for in return.”
She renewed her struggles, seeming to object physically to his assumptions as she spat out her reply.
“Go to hell. You know nothing about me. Don’t think you can figure me out.”
“Oh, I’ve got your number, lady -- and I use the term loosely.”
Tony listened to the outside door open and close before turning his attention back to the woman he held hostage. She, too, had heard the door and sagged against him in reaction. Michael and Niki were on their way.
“Okay, you won. They’re gone so you can let me go.”
Tony pulled back in surprise, and turned her to face him. “Let you go? You don’t get this, do you? This is not a game. You framed Michael for murder. The only place you’re going is to jail.”
“You can’t be serious. Michael knows I wouldn’t have allowed him to be charged with my murder. Come on. He knows it was just a game. I needed to prove my feelings for him, and I did.”
“You did that all right. I think you made your feelings very clear.” He took a step back and pulled her toward the bed.
“What are you doing?”
Her voice held a note of alarm, which he found amusing. Did she seriously think he wanted to have sex with her?
“I’m tying you to the bedpost. I have to make some calls. The police won’t be long.”
She fights against him, but is no match for his strength. Whipping her around, he pulls her arms behind her back and secures her to the post, using his belt.
“Why are you doing this? What do you get out of it?”
“Get out of it? Michael is my friend. Are you familiar of the concept? Probably not. Women like you don’t have friends.”
Her face pinched and just for a second or two, he wondered if his words had wounded her.
“Women like me. And just how would you describe women like me? Huh?”
She sat down on the corner of the bed, and sat next to her. There was no rush to call the police. She certainly wasn’t going anywhere.
“Let’s see. Hard. Cold. Manipulating. Willing to do anything to get what you want -- regardless of the cost to others.”
“And you see little Niki as the opposite, I suppose.”
“Maybe. A little naive, possibly. After all, she did get sucked in by you.”
Cassandra produced a dry laugh. “Of course, you would think that. You’re not as smart as you think you are.”
