CHAPTER 53

“Are you awake?”

Mikelle stirred again. “Where am I?”

Nicadea hesitated. “You’re in the woods. You’ve been hurt.”

He tried to sit up, but fell back. “I’m so dizzy. Do I have a head wound?”

“No, but you’ve lost a lot of blood.”

He moved his hand to his side and gingerly examined his wound. “How bad is it?”

“Bad enough. I need to made a poultice.”

The horses whinnied. Mikelle raised his head. “You’ve got to build a fire. Without it, the wolves will attack.”

“Wolves?” She looked around nervously.

“You will need to pick up sticks and twigs for kindling. Hurry.”

Nicadea worked quickly—spurred by the thought of feral eyes watching her every move. Light from a three-quarter moon provided her with enough light to see dim shapes. Thin twigs crackled under her feet. She stayed close, circling—careful to keep the general in sight. Using her skirt to bag the wood, she gathered enough to last for a couple of hours before returning to the campsite.

“Do you know how to make fire?” The general’s voice seemed out of place in the stillness of the night.

“I think so. I’ll try.” For the next fifteen minutes she worked at stacking the kindling and making a spark. The twigs were dry and caught quickly. Soon, the flames were high enough to add the larger branches. She found the fire comforting.

She glanced toward Mikelle. His eyes were closed--his breathing even. She knew his wound needed attention, but hated to wake him. She moved closer and reached out to move his clothing aside. Suddenly, his arm shot out--his hand closing around her wrist. His grip was strong, causing her to gasp in pain.

"What are you doing?" His voice was sluggish.

"Your wound needs some attention. I can make it better."

"Leave me alone, wench."

She pulled back and he let her go. Now, she was worried. She didn't care much for the man, but knew he would die if she didn't cleanse the wound. She shivered at the sound of a long howl in the nearby woods and put another log on the fire. Nature seemed to be conspiring against. She looked to the night sky and uttered a prayer to Logos.
