Window to the Soul 2 - Part 79a

Nikita yawned and stretched. The house was still, and the day loomed ahead. Sabine stuck her head in the door.

"We're going to church, Gwen, Roberta, and I. We would very much like you to come with us."

Their eyes met, and Sabine could see the reluctance there, but she prodded her charge.

"Nikita." Her soft urging caused Nikita to acquiesce.

"Am I under orders?"

"Yes."

She sighed. "All right. But please, Sabine, stay close."

Sabine nodded. This would be Nikita's first foray into the outside world since her release from the hospital. It was understandably scary. "Don't worry, mon enfant. It will be fine. You'll see." She helped her dress and fixed her hair, but Nikita was still feeling nervous. Sabine sensed her continuing discomfort. She stepped back and surveyed her work. Nikita looked lovely.

"You look, ah, quite presentable, my dear. Now, I need to assist your mother. Why don't you fix us some tea?"

Nikita headed for the kitchen. She prepared the tea and some toast and jam. She went to the front porch to retrieve the Sunday paper, but it was below the porch steps. She called for Sabine.

"What do I do about steps?"

"The church has a ramp. Most places have wheelchair access."

"Yeah, everyplace except our house."

Sabine smiled as she picked up the paper. "I already have someone coming to take care of it."

"Really? Who?" She sat for a moment, the spring sun warming her, and she felt her spirits lift. It was going to be a beautiful day.

"You'll see."

They joined Roberta in the kitchen, downed their light repast, and left for church.

Michael slept in a bit after a somewhat restless night. He rose and checked his messages. Hearing Nikita's contrite request for him to call gave him a bit of comfort. He showered and fixed his pot of espresso. He phoned Roberta's, but got the answering machine, and he decided not to leave a message. There was only one place they would be at this time on a Sunday.

He dressed and took off on his bike. The day was sunny and dry, and spring was truly in the air. The soft wind off the lake seemed fresh and beckoned him investigate. He parked and walked to his bench, and sat, his arms extended on either side of him, leaning back so the sun could warm his face. He closed his eyes against its unaccustomed brightness.

He thought back to the night. Every time he rolled over in bed, he had sought the sweet warmth of Nikita next to him. And missed it. Perhaps she was right. It was impossible to deny the sheer physicality of their attraction. A catlike smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Yes. He had to admit. You could hardly call what they had together sex. The heights of their ecstasy encompassed every aspect of their beings.

But he knew in his heart that he was in love with her long before their bodies joined. That day in the practice room... his spirit reborn... his soul captured by her vision of the music... It had taken him awhile to actually figure it out. But true it was. Love from the first.

Gulls circled, their cries opening his eyes to their graceful swooping and diving. He watched them as they fished for their breakfast. The water was a glassy green, the swells unruffled by the light breeze. Michael decided to go for a workout at the dojo again. He needed to shed his extra energy. Then practice this afternoon with Nikita. They could just play duets and not worry about the orchestra program. He would call as soon as he returned from the dojo...

They still hadn't resolved their argument. Nikita had sounded ready to talk. Michael took a deep breath as he realized that he would have to let her do this on her own terms. It went against every fiber in him, but if they were to have a lasting relationship, he needed to be able to relinquish control and compromise. He had never had to do that with Simone. As strong of a musician as she had been, she was an equally submissive wife, her background and training dominating her role as life companion.

Michael almost laughed out loud as he attempted to picture Nikita as the obedient mate. Not!

He suddenly realized that he thought of their relationship as permanent. He loved her as he had loved no other... but could he spend the rest of his life with her if she didn't recover?... if she never walked again? Michael reflected as he took a hard look at his motives. He already knew the truth... that even death could not part true lovers. Simone was a part of him forever. And Nikita... beyond forever...

He shook himself from his thoughts. He was way ahead of himself here. First things first. He had to get her through this, as he had promised. Michael headed for the dojo.
