Ryan himself is the first to admit that on WL, he does the opposite of everything he learned at Second City and in other training. It's true, RO, nobody really cares about the rules when they watch - in fact, just a theory, but perhaps improv on a whole is funnier without rules - if performed by GOOD improvisers, that is. As a reviewer, I do look for whether or not the live performers stick by the rules, because why else would they want their shows reviewed if not to have their training evaluated? But on a show like WL, it's not necessary - these guys have BEEN reviewed, they've BEEN tested, been criticized; been taught the right way to do improv. At this point they're doing it for the love and silliness and spontaneity of it all. And they make MILLIONS!! The average Toronto improv-er makes, at the most, $500 a show to be split among group members for corporate events - forget about club venues; they're lucky if they make $50 depending on the size of the audience. If improv was created for the purpose of comedy, rules and all, we have the right to look at the guys on WL and think, "wow." They perform without rules, without regulations, no strings attached, and yet - and yet - they have the biggest audience out of any other improv group (relatively speaking) in North America. They bring down the house without having to abide by the standard methods of being funny. I don't care what anybody says; free-versed or not, WL is an amazing show starring incredibly talented people.
Is anybody else here freaking out?? EXAMS!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!! Only 3 more days, 3 more days, then they're over! Wish me luck! I really should be studying now..........
peace out!
