Pak vernacular Press justified Pearl murder
Agencies/London
Sections of the Urdu press justified the murder of Wall Street Journal's Daniel Pearl, according to an analysis here of Pakistan's Urdu press in the days following confirmation of his death. A study of reactions in the Urdu press between February 26 and 28 by the Asia Pacific Foundation, a London-based international policy assessment Group, shows that while the English language press largely condemned the murder while also being critical of the US, the Urdu language press "sought to justify Pearl's brutal murder and were virulent in their assessment of the US".
Washington and Islamabad announced on February 21 that Pearl had been murdered. No newspapers were published for three days following because of Eid.The first Pakistani media response to Pearl's grisly beheading by his kidnappers was therefore not made until February 26. Following is a sample:
Nawa-e-Waqt said in an editorial (Feb 26) that Pearl's death was a reaction to the savage US policy, being enforced under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Takbeer weekly, Feb 28: After making the assertion that Islam is a religion of tolerance and peace, it explained the reasons for Pearl's death on the grounds that that he was a Jew. Aisaf reinforced (Feb 28) the allegations of Pearl's kidnappers that he was a CIA/Mossad agent. An article by Hamid Mir - Osama bin Laden's official biographer - said Pearl also had Israeli citizenship and that it was significant he was based in India. Daily Pakistan, Feb 26: In an article Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman pointed out that through the murder, Americans were told that the entire Muslim world hated them for their anti-Islam policies. Daily Jang, Feb 26: It said mosque leaders in Pakistan had reminded their congregations during Eid festival prayers that Islam was facing a continuing and a greater threat from the US.
Nawa-e-Waqt, Feb 26: Jamaat-e-Islami leader Munawwar Hassan wrote in an article that the US and "infidels" had declared war on Islam and Muslims were dying in large numbers throughout the world.
Daily Jang, Feb 27: Abdul Qadir Hassan wrote that the US had made Pakistan a key a target for its "cruel policies", that the new Israel for the US in Asia was India, and that Americans were ruthless in their attitude towards Pakistan. Daily Jang, Feb 27: Hamid Gul, the former head of Pakistan's Intelligence agency, was quoted in an article as having told a meeting of Jamaat-e-Islami that the US was the main enemy of Pakistan because Washington wanted to turn the country into a secular State.
