The claim that bin Laden has escaped the Americans for now raised the possibility he may never be found.

"I don't mean to trivialize it, but he's going to become the Elvis Presley of the East," said Eugene Carroll, a retired U.S. rear admiral.

"There will be sightings of Osama bin Laden...we'll not be certain what his condition or location is."
