My brothers had a gas mask when they were teenagers. God only knows where they got it. They had war on the brain. I think they were practicing for Nam or something.

But they told me they got it off a dead Civil War soldier under our house. It is true that the house we lived in then had been used as a hospital during the Civil War. It was also true that under the house was a very dangerous place for a child. There was a basement that just had a ladder going down into it that a child could easily fall into. There were snakes and who knows what else.

I was a teenager before it occured to me that there were no gas masks during the Civil War, and a body would not have still been there a hundred years later.

But I NEVER went under the house. Not once. Never even tried it. Couldn't have been paid to try it. Couldn't be paid to try it even now.

So the ignirint tirds at least knew one thing--sometimes the best thing to do is just scare the bejeezus out of a little kid.
