Amber champagne filly snorted softly. A bird flew overhead, its wings slicing through the silence, swishing. It was the first sign of life she had seen for days...were the floods calming down...?

Her ears flicked curiously, amber eyes dilated and alert. She shivered slightly, delicate hairs standing on end. Suddenly, without warning, a ray of golden sunlight danced upon her hide. Rosy fingers of dawn stretched themselves across the brown water, darting pink shadows. The bird's piercing cry heralded a new day. Dapples of sunlight twinkled on her copper coat, for a moment...then were gone. Hidden behind a menacing black cloud. But the sunlight had given her hope and a meaning of life. She whickered to Yuluwirri and nipped her creamy rump playfully, splashing in the water, sending up spray which flecked her in chocolate droplets. A feeling of contentment swelled in her chest. Her shimmering coat of sunlight made the shadows ebb away in fear. She glowed in the eternal darkness of the floods. A filly of exquisite beauty.

Had she not been born in tremendous floods...
