.. she shook her head softly as she moved closer and hooked the bucket over her arm - not wanting to put it down lest he should step in it and hurt himself . she wrung out the sponge so that it was not terribly wet and began to apply the warm water to his cuts very gently, her other hand pressed to a spot on his neck where she knew there was a nerve that would dull most of the pain when pinched . when all the cuts were cleaned she put on the ointment which formed a scab over the cuts to protect them from getting infected and to help them heal ..

'Well darlin' that should help. I'm sorry if it hurt.'

.. she pulled a couple of carrots from her pocket ..

'After your dinner I'll let you out in the paddock for a while to stretch your legs.'
