Case 19A-12:
The caverns below Bridalveil
Bridalveil, November 9th 256,
Fate has appointed me a new task. Yesterday I encountered a small group of people, some of which were locals, heading into the crypts. I followed them down and ordered them to halt. The first impression I got from the group was that it consisted of volunteers and lacked organization.
During my first contact with the above mentioned group I was told they were investigating a missing person case. The missing person was last seen entering the Bridalveil crypts. I was just about to order everybody outside when we heard a noise. We set out to investigate and found that the earthquake that took place a week before had uncovered a series of caves connected to the crypts. As descended down by a rope, apparantly put in place by other people who went down before us.
The investigation down soon led us to a 'room' in the caves filled with corpses. I recognized some faces as locals, and I am unsure of others. I believe some were members of the Knights of St. Calumus as well.
Soon after we discovered a doorway that led to the Dwarf Halls. The Dwarf halls were mysteriously deserted and we saw bloodstains on the floors.
Once we descended once more we discovered a vast cave complex. Large enough to make even a Dwarf feel lost.
Several hostile creatures attacked us during our journey. Small gobliniod creatures, and lizardlike creatures tall as a man assaulted us. We sustained several casualties, although none too serious. I myself was wounded as well.
The elf magi that was amongst the people in the group, Thalan, began showing signs of madness. He claimed to hear a voice that was telling him to go to several places. At one point the elf had gone off on his own to wander around.
While exploring the caves we found several horribly mutilated corpses. One man's face seemed to be clawed or bitten off. I took his armor and decorated knife with me, so his family might recognize it. An elf priestess or cleric in the group insisted on giving the man some kind of burial. We lowered him into the water and went on our way again. Later we found several other corpses. Amongst them was a man 'stapled' to the ground, for lack of a better term. Another was impaled on a stake. Yet another had died chained to a wall.
Several of the caves seemed to have doorways carved out. Crude, but definately doorways of some sort.
By now, the fighting and darkness had caused our group to be split up. Only a few of the original group was still together. Up to this moment I am still uncertain what happened to some of the others. For their sake, I hope they found their way back up but I fear worse things might have happened to them.
Thalan rejoined us later on and began speaking of this voice of his again. At first, I discarded the mention of the voice for madness but strangely enough the voice did seem to lead us somewhere. We found a hole in the wall of a cave that led us into some kind of dark temple. Upon investigation we were attacked once more by the strange lizardlike creatures and the goblinoids. One lizard-creature spoke of a mistress and claimed that she did not want us there.
The temple had rivers of lava flowing through it and strange noises came from all around us.
We became stuck when we came to a locked door. Too strong to kick in, we began searching for a key. Thalan, the mad elf, used the 'voice' to lead us to a goblinoid encampment where we indeed found a key. At that point I began to seriously mistrust the elf. He seemed far too eager to listen to the voice.
After making our way back to the evil temple's locked door we prepared for trouble. It was obvious that this voice wanted us to open the door, and I feared what lay behind the door. Looking back, I realize we should not have opened the door at all.
The door initially led to an empty room. After several more corridors though, we came to a female. I do not believe she was a human. Though it might be superstition, every member of our group felt some kind of 'evil' around this female. The voice that led us there clearly belonged to this individual.
She demanded we give the key we used to open the door to her. She thought Thalan had the key, but in fact Bryan, another member of our group, had it. When we refused to hand it over she cast a spell on us that blinded us all. After our vision was restored Thalan and the female were gone. Also, the 'feeling' of evil we felt before diminished. We rushed to the exit, hoping to find the two before they went outside but failed.
After extensive searching we were unable to find Thalan or the woman again.
Later that day we went back up to the surface. The fresh air was relieving. We took place in the Bride's Maid Tavern to rest a bit before reporting to the Head Constable when suddenly Thalan walked in and joined us at our table.
Thalan claimed that he blacked out and woke up on a field in Bridalveil. He remembers nothing.
He said the voice was talking to him again and said three should go to the Mayor and he must go into the crypts once more. Instead, we moved to the Sherrif's post to report. While I did my report Thalan and another person, an archer, had taken off to the Crypts. We tracked them down and found that Thalan had gone more insane. The archer apparantly had gone with him to keep an eye on him.
I took Thalan back to the head Constable who ordered me to put the elf in a holding cell, where he remains now.
My current orders are to retrieve the corpses from the caves and attempt to contact the families of the deceased.
Some of the people in the group were:
-Myself
-Feyr, apparantly a Knight of St. Calumus
-Bryan, a knight or soldier of sorts
-Thalan, the mad elf magi accompanied by a small flying demonic creature
-The elf priestess or cleric whose name I do not know
-The archer who followed Thalan back into his last trip to the crypts
There were several others as well when the group first set out, but all had disappeared at the end. Also, the elf priestess was also missing. Perhaps we shall encounter some of the others when we go down once again to retrieve the bodies of the deceased.
Signed,
Robert Hughes
Constable of Bridalveil
