In case you're intending to buy something new:
1) Try removing the soundcard from your computer and see if NWN runs better. If it does, you know the problem is the soundcard. Is it doesn't, proceed to step 2
2) If you've got a friend who lives nearby who also has a computer, contact him/her and install NWN on his/her computer. If it works there, maybe you can borrow some parts of his/her computer to find out where the problem lies. The main item to borrow would be the graphics card. Replace the new card with the borrowed one and install it properly. See if NWN works. If it doesn't, return the graphics card.
3) If neither of the above provides you with any solution, I'd say it's 98% certain it has to be a software related problem. Again, ensure that you have the latest versions of:
-Your graphics card driver
-Your soundcard driver
-DirectX 8.1
If you have all those, see if you can find users with the same graphics card as you on forums and find out if they're having the same difficulties. Try posting on the forums as well - maybe they have suggestions.
4) This is a suggestion I've read from time to time, though it has never done me any good. Who knows, it might help you. You'll have to do some digging around in the settings, since I don't remember where you can find it, but try looking for the Hardware acceleration settings of your graphics card. It should be close to where you can find the settings for changing your virtual memory, if that's any help. There's a slider - try lowering it a bit.
5) Find out how much RAM you have. Since you're experiencing lock-ups, it could be that you don't have enough RAM. I think you need atleast 96mb, but since RAM is very cheap these days it wouldn't hurt to get 256mb.
6) Last, but not least, see if you can alter the game's settings. Lower all display settings of the game to the absolute minimum and see if it helps a bit. If you think it does, raise them to the absolute maximum and see if it's buggier than with the minimum settings. If it is, it's probably hardware related instead of software related.
Ofcourse, this only works if you can actually get into the game.
And that's all I can come up with right now.
Personally, I have a vague hunch it might be your soundcard or your RAM. Either one of them isn't expensive these days.
