 I haven't actually tried much of it myself, since I think Gamespy sucks big time and I can't ever manage to get the results I want.

I imagine you'll have -very- little luck in finding a good RP session on the fly. 98% of all servers will have the Diablo-style hack'n slash players on it. I suggest that you look for messageboards and websites that have servers for RPers. If you find those, note down the IP numbers if you can find them and try them out from time to time.
Other than that, I see very little good coming out of joining a random server.
