I believe that Laura Branigan hit first with "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You," in 1983...even though some years later songwriter Michael Bolton would hit with his version of the tune he penned. Anyway, this would disqualify her from only hitting with remakes...unless someone had hit with "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" first.

As far as artists who qualify for the "only remakes" category, I can think of Sybill, who hit in 1989 or so with "Don't Make Me Over," a Dionne Warwick remake...and hasn't been seen on the top 40 chart since.
