Subject: December 13 1980(John Lennon tribute show)...the details!
In reply to: Jeff Case 's message, "Re: December 13 1980(John Lennon tribute show)" on 00:02:49 04/13/02 Sat

the John Lennon Tribute Show was program # 804-11 with the chart date of 12/13/80.

I have the original program box and 3 of the 5 discs, Thanks to Tom Best, I am assembling a reasonable facsimile of "the emergency replacement disc" on CDR from the differences of sides 1a and 4b. it was pretty basic what they actually did...completely cut the "posthumous hits in the top 40 QL" teaser at the end of hour 1 segment 2, went right into the jingle logo out, and the backsell of together by tiara went straighten into the # 37 jingle into he's so shy by the pointer sisters....cutting the payoff feature originally in segment 3

In hour 4, segment 5 was completely redone, with a 1:48 sec tribute by casey to john and yoko and sean, followed by the song-just like starting over, and a back sell, which is delivered very sincere. very touching and moving, although I hope stations ran spots or promos after the segment, because going into segment 6, the final of the show, there's quite a substantial change in casey's voice...positive, upbeat...energetic....not good if you are running the program without spots...you need something to smooth the transition between the two extremes.

the ORIGINAL hour 4 seg 4 was definiitely NOT a good thing to run, and obviously, a wise decision to replace. going into the segment..."up two notches to # 4, john lennon with starting over" up positive sell into the song....but the backsell was a different matter "...john lennon has moved from 10, to 9, to 6 to this week # 4 in our countdown with his comeback song called just like starting over the three biggies are coming right up" (casey's coast to coast logo jingle out!)

the show would have REAL EGG on their face if they didn't do something....did ANY station accidently NOT RUN the replacement disc? things happen at the station level, I know only too well, board ops play the wrong sides, PD's forget to put the shows in control...stuff like that. if it went smooth as is implied, I think that's very lucky!

BTW, unfortunately tom best did not have the other record I am missing sourced from the original program discs. I'm looking for sides 1B (hour 1-segs 4, 5, 6) and 3A (hour 3-segs 1, 2, 3). While I appreciate tom supplying a copy on CDR taped off air, I'm curious to know if anyone has a original program disc source for these sides. In addition, a copy of the cues would be nice, and if anyone actually has any documentation (if any exists!) regarding the issue of the replacement disc (hmmmmm.....where was the lettering on the label??? I'd like to make a reasonable facsimile label as well...) I would appreciate any other help people can provide. This is one show i'd like to get up to spec!
