I understand this very well. In 1977 and 1978, when AT40 had not yet gone to 4 hours, and there were some 4 minute + songs out there, AT40 would edit many songs and yet toss in some extra. While extras are a nice touch, one time they played the entire 5 minutes plus of Elton John's "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds". Needless to say many songs were edited to make room for that.
As for top 10 edits, remember that during the 3 hour period of the show, the hours were roughly divided as follows Hour 1:#40-#27, Hour 2:#26-#14 and Hour 3:#13-#1. So even in the final hour, a song would probably get edited. "Stayin Alive" probably was chosen on 18 March as it was the oldest song in the top 13. But also remember some songs are not easily lended to editing.
The best time for full length songs was probably Oct 1978 to Feb 1979, when AT40 went to 4 hours but before the Top 3 recap was introduced. Many disco hits on the top 40 at that time got their full album length versions played during that time.
