I think you are missing the point Allen Walker. Satanists are ACTIVELY Anti-Dogmatic Religion. (inlcuding islam, christianity, and judaism(not just christian). Athiests couldnt care less to CONSIDER why religion may have gone wrong. Athiests do not celebrate spirituality and deep thinking through the pleasures and physical body, whereas Satanists do.. and Satanists also enjoy participating in philosophy, and thinking about religion and transcendental ideas, even if only to prove their illogical nature.
Many Satanists I know, including myself, are involved in some form of ritualized mysticism. ie. connecting directly with the divine through ritual. This could be through an emphasis of the carnal nature of man, or a spiritualized sexual practice, or through the contact of dieties and spirits on the other side to assist us with our goals in life, be they getting a better job, or money, or becomming more of what we want to be in life. I actually practice a few different versions of demonology that you find in the goetia. They assist me to get what I need, and I help them too.. they need things, blood, food.. to keep them alive on the astral plane.
On top of this, Just to prove you wrong that I don't know anything about religion, I have a M.A. in Comparitive Religion, and many people in my program were Satanists, or at least held very very similar belief structures. Why is it that when you study a religion, you dont believe in it dogmatically anymore? No one was of a religion such as Xianity, or Judiasm, no one out of 140 ppl who graduated with me at my Ivy League school.
Satan to me might exist, I can't know, or not know.. but I don't spend my time worshipping him.. I am the one that needs to be worshipped. For further clarification please read The Satanic Bible - LaVey, and anything by Aleister Crowley.
As far as Satan being symbolic of mans basic urges, well he is! The Christians especially have outlawed and demonized all our normal urges, making them Satanic.. its their doing, not ours. We are just trying to redeem these things without caring to CLEANSE the image. We accept the image that you are labeling people like us with, and use it as a caricature to revel in.
These chains they made to bind us, may they be tools of our insatiable lust.
