I rather enjoyed Andromeda for the first 2 seasons, it looked as if they were going to do something we had not seen in a sci fi show before. They were going to cultivate a culture and create intelligent fully rounded characters. Lets face it, characters are what sells a series. A mercenary who is genetically trecherous? A drug addicted smuggler, a reformed alien monster, not to mention a hero who is lost and alone in a dark new world, and what may or may not be a diety? This was a cast of characters, made a body want to care about them, and what they did.

Then it all changed, the arc stories became episodic, just like star trek. All the continuity of the character's backstories just became so much window dressing, and it became a single character against the universe in a super powerful ship. Throw in a vague threat like the abyss and some scary hench men like the new Magog and we don't have to use a story.

I felt vaguely betrayed by the change of the series mythos, turning all of the issues that were examined in the first two sseasons into just vehicals for Dylan to flex his heroic muscles against. I will not even mention the inappropriate humor that is added to scenes to show our Captain is hip and light hearted....sigh.

Has andromeda declined? Possibly, the writing is cluttered now,we care less for the characters and if the writing is any indication, they care less for each other. But with television losing more and more of the storytelling art to reality television and scandal shows, I don't fault the series, nor the actors or the writers.

After all, they need to eat too...too bad though, I really did like the first 2 seasons.
