Its because we've been taught as a society to rely on the finality of schedules and consequences. What happens today affects tomorrow. So if we want to be happy tomorrow, we may not be able to do something that makes us happy today. Carpe Diem, but be safe about it. So many people go through this cycle: School (to get a good job that makes money) -> Job that makes money (to save for retirement) -> Reirement (live off SS benefits to give children good inheritance). When do we ever get to use that money? Its a never ending cycle... the children use that money to pay for school and so on.
And those who can't afford to save can't save because the cost of living is so high. The cost of living is so high that we can't afford to live. Almost ironic, isn't it?

Today is the slave of yesterday because what we do inour past affects today. I'm not in jail because I didn't take that drug, granted I'm not dead because I didn't take that drug. But if yesterday weren't the slave of today it wouldn't have mattered if I had gotten high off that drug. I would have been happy then, and wouldn't have to worry about the consequences.

In conclusion today isn't really the slave of yesterday or tomorrow, it is more the slave of our own consciences....

Wow, good question, thanks for asking.
