......... He eventually wandered to the end of the dock to think. As he sat there he watched the moon ripple in the waves of the lake. Its yellow face crinkling from waves that started on the other side of the lake. He uncrossed his legs and let the right one dangle down. Careful not to let it plunge into the warm wetness below he tapped the surface of the water with the rubber sole of his shoe. "What am I doing?" he thought to himself. "Why can't I just decide and leave it at that? Why does everything have to be such a big deal with me? Its only the rest of my life... nothing important. I can deal if I'm not happy. I always deal.". A single tear slowly slid down his face.

He heard footsteps on the dock. They were light. He knew who it was. He could tell by the way her slippers suffed as they passed over each rickety plank. He didn't look back. He didn't want to confirm what he already knew. He didn't want to talk to anyone. The tear fell from his face and splashed into the lake. He concentrated on the little ripples as they faded out of existence.

"Hey kid," said the voice that belonged to the slippers, "why you sitting way out here?" He ignored the question. He stared into the lake. In the wan moonlight he could barely make out her face. She was staring at his reflection. Faces mirrored to each other in a wavy pool. So much that couldn't be told in those faces.

A fresh wash of pain slowly washed over his body. He shivered. He felt a blanket thrown over his shoulders. It was soft, and fuzzy. She knew just the blanket he liked. She didn't have to understand everything to understand enough. He sat there still and quite as the blanket helped warm him.

Slowly she turned and the same sound of the scuffing slippers on the dock was heard. He listened to it until he couldn't hear it anymore. He heard the porch door shut just as another tear escaped and splashed into the lake.

He didn't know how long he sat out there, but he knew it was long enough to want a hug from her. He was so lonely. And she could only offer so little.... He took that little that she offered and was very grateful for it. She didn't understand that being his friend was all she could do, it was the best she could do. He loved her for that.
