Subject: Airplane Poem

In seat 17E I
can smell the remnant of a woman.
She flew in to Houston from Honaloulou
or Portland or Beijing and her perfume
sank deep into the triangle print.

Airport goodbyes never live up
to the expectation but somehow
I boarded anyway with the feeling
I'd left a shirt or a sock under
the bed, something not worth missing
a flight for. Smelling

this woman I want to shake
her hand and hear her
say she's doing fine.
She would be the opposite
of flying through a cloud for the first
time: having to come to grips
with the fact that they can never
be just cotton anymore.

The engines are owls that hold
their notes and they sing louder
as we take off.
Outside the sky is splotches of paint
as the sunsets. We fly into
it, entering a Van Gough and it makes
this moment permanent. These people,
this plane, someday someone will discover
them and me at a 35 degree
angle piercing the sky, someday
they will fold their arms
while they look us over
and they will place a bid
on this takeoff.
