The trusting cynic
Is always hurt,
Whispering to myself
'I should have known.'

So I'll keep a secret in my pocket
To keep me company,
And when alone I won't be lonely,
Only by myself.

But some day someone will ask
For change to buy a coffee,
And I'll hand them three quarters,
The secret and my trust.

Because I'm too in love with irony to spare myself the pain
And too in love with misery to not do it again.
