Subject: i was there all night

something reminded me tonight
in a second i was there
in a world of our own creation
and fantasy
foolish in its founding
like a child's first clay cup.

i was there by at your feet for hours
wiping the sweat from your brow,
i was tucking in quilts
as ragged breathing tore apart the room
scrathing at my open heart;
i was holding yet unbroadened shoulders
against the racking, against the shaking till,
as light crept in my windown, they were still.

that night a piece of glass
could have been the moon itself shattering.
thinking of it,
i still can feel that stab of cold fear
clinging to me with all its horrible fingers
as i rocked Love, wounded in my arms,
whispering words you could not hear
through the blood rining in your ears.

though you did not know,
i was there for hours
i was there all night
and i am there again now
and i'm crying for that clay cup,
and I'm crying for those shoulders.
