At the Train Station

Evan put his head down
in her lap. Carole looked conflicted
as he sighed. “He’s asleep already,”
she said. I said No way.
“Yea, he does it like that,”
her face glowing in the dimly
lit hallway. Her eyes were coffee
beans as she looked down at his hand
in hers, fingers like branches
growing together. “Should I drop it?”
her voice a joke on a headstone.
I didn’t answer, but she heard a yes.
Evan’s hand hit the tile and he stirred,
eyelids parting slightly. They shut again,
and he assembled the noises of a man sleeping
between legs.

Sometimes loyalty is a bad thing. “I
know,” she said, her breath making his curls
sway, “I know.”
