18 years of shared history
18 years of inextricable lives
now i continue on my own
a bit frightened
and entirely alone

since a suckling babe you held me
i the offspring of thy loins
so much more now
i've grown into a man
you've molded me so

ever present in a changing life
you guided the course of my river
as i flowed to the sea
i now halt at the mouth
and trepidatiously continue

18 year old eyes water
40-something eyes water, too
this is my final goodbye
we stand akward
words stop thick in our throats

an unspoken truth hangs
between us on a dewy thread
our hands clasp like those of men
this moment shall be our last forever
you the father, i the son

two men stand locked
in a first and final embrace
you needn't say you love me
i hear it loud
when i look in your eyes.
