I wasn't the girl to take with you.
You left me on the porch of never
and fast forward me out of your memory.

I can still visualize your face
and feel your hair in my hands,
but I can't feel you anymore.

You have a heat to your chill, these days,
and neither fire nor ice can manipulate it.

When my mind wanders over you
I know where I will slip
and where I will curl around you.

You gaze at me with distrust and caution,
always below my eyes-
you hate the color
and the way they travel to you,
a cancer
like the smoke you push away.

"How long has it been?" I scream.

You tell me Spanish makes you laugh.

"How long has it been?"

But I'm beyond tears, and you're beyond me-
laughing at the Spanish I didn't say.
