Subject: down by the lake

i heard a sound.
it came from down by the lake where we met.
i didn't want to look, but as it grew louder,
i had to open my eyes.
i had to see.
i followed closely along the path we came,
i had to be sure.
as the sound grew louder,
i became more and more certain of what was to come,
what i had suspected long ago,
just like you silently remind me still.
i had to see.
the water had grown cold,
black.
there were no fish,
no frogs.
even the mosquitos had flown away.
they were wise.
