ISBN：是用來分別每本書的獨特編號，對於圖書館或特別注重不同版本的書的人購書非常有用
它由四部份組成
國家碼 - 出版社碼 - 書次碼 - 稽核號
如台灣，國家出版部(Government Publication Office) 給予台灣的號碼為957
校園書房出版社為587
愛與衝突(86年初版4刷) 為該出版社出版的第441本書
2 為稽核碼，是用特定的算式按前三個號碼計算出來的
所以
愛與衝突(86年初版4刷) 的ISBN 為 957-587-441-2

整個ISBN都沒有任何數字代表書的內容科目或類別，所以無法從ISBN看出那書是關於什麼的，但至少我可以知道那本書是在哪裡出版。
