Subject: Re: Any Suggestions? Look to start a new 12U Tournament team in the Huntington - Chesapeake, OH area
In reply to: JC 's message, "Any Suggestions? Looking to start a new 12U Tournament team in the Huntington - Chesapeake, OH area" on 12:29:14 01/06/04 Tue

I have never started a travel team, but DD has been with a couple of first year teams and a couple of established teams and I have seen up close some of what they have done right and wrong.

Start NOW! If you could have started earlier that would have been even better. If you wait until spring most of the players will already have been recruited, most of the better sponcers will have been taken, and you will be rushing through things that you will want to spend more time on.

requirements

Nothing says that you have to belong to only 1 association. Pick your tournaments, then associations (will save you from joining any needlessly and waisting $). Ask around and coaches will tell you which tournaments they like best, eliminates some trial and error and wasted $. Since some of the players have played before, I am sure they have their oppinions as well.

>(fees, team and player registration, etc)

Those would mostly be based on your goals for the season. Set goals not only for this season, but the future. Be realistic (first year teams don't normally step out there and win every game). Fees, take your estimated costs, divide them up equally for all players, keep and show financial records. Don't depend on fundraisers. You can always split any left over money and give it back (fundraising incentive) or add a tournament (fall is fun).
Don't get in over your head. By that I mean don't expect first time TB players at 12U to play every weekend or travel an extreme amount. Break them in slowly, mostly the parents' purse strings.

Great, you are already on base! Run with it by getting players that you and the team will want to be with all the time for up to the next 8 or so years. Just because a kid can play well doesn't mean you really want to spend THAT much time with them. 1 bad apple can spoil the whole bunch! That includes parents!!!!!!!!!!!! Besides young stars sometimes fade with age, while those with just a glimmer and a good attitude can excel in the right environment.

Post your question on several message boards. I am sure you will get lots of replies. Just because some one gives you their $.02 doesn't mean it is worth that much. Don't forget to search their archives for previously posted information. Since you will also be pulling from the Ohio area, post this on their BB http://www.game-ex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl I see this question asked a lot on eteamz.com.

If there is a single organization you are sure you are going to join, contact the local representative and they will answer most of your questions.

Most of all HAVE FUN! If it's not any fun, no one (including you) will want to be there.

I hope this helps.
