He sent the petition and plea to every faculty member at the university I am with.

So do expect that some of the people will sign the petition even though they have no knowledge whatsoever regarding the science of global change. They will sign it because they were asked in a convincing manor, or because they want to be famous, or because they simply want to stir up some trouble.

That's human nature and it has little to do with science.
