Sorry, I reread your post and you said..." as soon as he retired we took it out and invested it in other places( not in the stock market)" That was 5 years ago according to your post. That means you missed a 73% gain if you had just invested it in a mutual fund that mimiced the Dow Jones average. If you had gone with a mutual fund that had mimiced the Russell 5000 or a small or mid cap fund you would have more than doubled your money. I manage my daughter's 401k and have got her 25 to 30 percent each of the last five years in a small cap value fund and a mid cap value fund. When a person retires, you still have to have a long view due to the fact you could still live 25 to years years after you retire. You never want to run out before you die.
