The water temperatures in the arabian sea can support very powerful hurricanes, it is only the way the modern climate steers weather that keeps these storms away from the arabian peninsula and instead they hit india and bangledesh. Perhaps this storm was just a fluke occurance, with ocean temps warmer than normal, but if climate zones were to shift suddenly, countries like oman that were built on deserts may suddenly find themselves in lakes and rivers of a tropical zone, and likewise, places that were once lush green areas may suddenly turn into dessert, this threat is far greater than even the mass destruction that super hurricanes like katrina cause to coastal areas.
