Lightning doesn't kill people. People being in the wrong place at the wrong time kills people. I just want to be clear about that before the Liberals start chiming in about Lightning Control.

GARRETT, Pa. (AP) — A pregnant Amish woman and her unborn child were killed by lightning about 75 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

State police say 36-year-old Mary H. Yoder was picking berries in the woods near her home with her husband and two children at about 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

A storm moved in and Yoder took shelter under one tree, while her husband and the children went under a different tree. Police say lightning struck a few minutes later, killing Yoder, who was 9 months pregnant.

Police continue to investigate.

Yoder is the 11th person to be killed by lightning in the USA this month, according to National Weather Service meteorologist John Jensenius.

"July is proving to be a very deadly month," he says. A typical July sees 16 lightning deaths across the country, which is the deadliest month, on average.

Overall, so far this year, Jensenius reports that 17 people have been killed by lightning.

On average, 54 people are killed by lightning each year in the USA, he reports.
