Because he was a means to foment unrest in Tsarist Russia and hasten their capitulation. They didn't allow it so Russia would become the USSR. Most Germans were pretty dismayed that Hitler was dragging them into another war at the onset of it all. But what could they do, having been disarmed and at the mercy of their government? Gun control, you know. One of your favorite themes. I lived among the Germans for 4 years and speak the language, although a bit rusty these days. I know their nature as well as anyone. They seem to thrive on authority.
