Subject: Intent - Incidental...
In reply to: Donk 's message, "Re: Too Good to be true, depending..." on 22:06:46 09/24/02 Tue

The chicken or the egg. I'm dialing my cell phone and don't see the little old lady crossing the street. I didn't intend anything to happen.

By the way, I've been fed by cooks who would make better arsonists.

In my opinion it is the action not the intent. It is the outcome not the prelude.

For whatever reason the woman acted in a manner normally viewed by society - not a synonym for state as I apply the word - as outside the bounds of civil behavior, nurturing parent, enlightened human being.

I admit it, I've whacked my kids on the butt. I was satisfied their attention was gained with one swat. One swat and there would have been no story and little or no outrage. It was in the duration and frequency, and the age and the inability of the child to protect herself.

I don't know if I'm surprised or disappointed that you don't think the mother's actions were extreme. And I'm not a spare the rod and spoil the child person, as long as the rod isn't a re-bar.

No. I think it is the business of a society to be as good a bunch of people as it can be, one by one. Essential to that is for individuals to act with a bit of self-control. I guess I define self-control in part as a willingness to condone, ignore, tolerate, respect, etc. the right of another to engage in an act I would or might otherwise find offensive. But that willingness is less liberal when it comes to actions involving children.

I was told that a child is conditioned to some behavior paths by age six. If that is true even in part, what conditioning has this child received? I'm guessing but the incident didn't seem to me like a first and only time thing.

People disagree. It is a driving force in the growth of the human spirit, though there are some who would observe that 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you' is the boundary dividing the good from the dark side of it.

Parents get no freebie from me when it comes to working out frustrations on a child. We'll probably disagree.
