First, maybe some sort of operational definition is in order since the concept of ethics wants to define itself, or not.

What are the salient qualities of that concept? In the end, the Golden Rule seems completely adequate. If we accept the golden rule as absolute, then we could logically digress from that point into various behaviors, deciding by that measure, their ethical natures.

Certainly, the Golden Rule depends on a certain assumption, that we share inate characteristics, a sort of norm and so we do. Does the Golden Rule allow for variations? yes, so it doesn't contradict. That is, if one does unto another of like mind, then the Golden Rule survives opinion and personal variation.

Also, the Golden Rule disputes one set of values over another -- that is, do unto others only what we think should be done. The ruke regulates this possibility by forcing all behaviors into the do unto you test.

So, ethics simply demands the discipline to use and apply the Golden Rule and in doing so, we discover we're doing well to "take care of our own houses," so we might tend to respect the privacy of others and leave them alone unless they are actually being harmful.

Weak ending. Oh well, "what'cha gonna do?"
