First, Israel was created at the expense of Palestine; This simple fact underlies all other events and is a discussion all its own. The Arab world, for this and religious reasons, won't accept Israel in any sort of good humor.

Various wars take place -- until one in 1967 when Israel is just about beaten and is on the verge of a last act of desparation. Tha threat is huge and everybody agrees to compromise.

Years pass, and the Israelis continue to build settlements on land lost to the Arabs. The builders are Zionists or really fundamental Jews who do not accept any Arabs on the land defined by their religion. Basically, it is the Zionists who have been behind the whole Israel/country idea and it is based in religion. At this point, it is important to separate facts from rationalizations -- there are alot of rationalizations used to defend the actions of the Jews, but the facts are what they are.

So, the settlements keep getting built on Arab land; mainstream Israelis either won't or can't stop them and the Pals keep complianing and complaining and appealing to anybody who will listen, but the settlements keep growing. Finally, the Pals start fighting against the settlers (like Indians versus whites in the USA,) and Israel retaliates with a huge amount of force. Remember when the jokes were going around about "Mess with me and I'll kill your whole family?" Well, that was the Israeli response.

So, comes Carter, then later Clinton, and both are the first to call it like it is. Israel leadership starts looking at compromise -- reaches some agreements, gets thrown out of office and replaced by Sharon who is a Zionist and who has fought the Arabs all his life. No more agreements, no more discussion. Everybody waits -- frozen, like Eastwood when he walks into the bar in "Unforgiven" to kill everybody.

Then Clinton is out -- Bush is in -- and Sharon has a kindred soul in the White House. The world knows there won't be any more compromises -- the settlements start growing again (they never really stopped), the Pals have no rights, no voice, and no political clout -- they are reduced to an occupied population -- like France in WWII, so they start fighting back -- again, in the only way they can.

And that is where we are today. There are Pals who don't want Israel to exist at all. There are Zionists who don't care if the Pals exist as long as it isn't in the land they believe was given to them by God. What is happening right now is an Israeli sweep to destroy most, if not all, the armed opposition in the Pal camp. It won't work, but it makes Sharon feel good.

The issue of the settlements is what is called the "occupied" land and it represents the essence of the beliefs held by the Zionists. I mean, talk about people who still fight the civil war -- these people are fighting the same issues for more than 2000 years.

In casual conversation, we wonder why the Israelis are complaining when they knew it would be this way -- even sang songs about it back in the late forties! They knew they would have to fight until the end of time, but they didn't care and they said it was worth it.

In other casual conversation, people wonder why they did waht they did when they were doing just fine in practically all cultures. I guess they didn't see it that way.
