Subject: A general blanket catchup, sort of...

I wish I could ascribe evil motives to the people in charge of our government right now; it would make things so much simpler to just be able to say, "They're evil." But I don't think they really are, even though I do think their course of action is undeniably leading to evil results. I think their course is, for the most part, based entirely on what they think is right and proper. There's little doubt that it is possible to be wrong and sincere.

I don't hate Bush; I think he would make a great shoe salesman, but anything else is above his pay grade. He and the rest of his cabinet are doing what their background and "station in life" have persuaded them is the proper course for the country. I will concede some doubt about Cheney, but Ashcroft and Rumsfeld no doubt see things as they would have us believe they see them. I can't make up my mind about where Powell stands. It's very difficult to believe he hasn't compromised his ethics in the course of his career, given where he started and where he now is. I suspect there are problems there that haven't seen the light of day.

I believe Bush's veneer of invincibility is starting to crack, to show signs of wear and tear, if you will. The discrepancy between his charming presentation and his actions is becoming more problematical for the voter to reconcile. By late summer, I expect that people will come to realize that almost any president would have been able to gain the support of a vast majority of the population for reprisals (that's what they are) against terrorism. I believe they will look at how his proposals affect their pocketbooks and their environment, and judge him accordingly.
