We know that over-tightening a gland follower onto soft shaft packing causes abrasive damage to tail shaft seal lands. I am looking for some photographic evidence of this. While damaged shafts are not hard to find and photograph, the packing that caused the damage is more elusive. Anyone with photos proving the link is invited to email them to argos@clear.net.nz. Many thanks.

Date Posted: 07:48:09 03/01/06 Wed

Hi,
In last 8 years as a Shipmaster I have visited more than 150 vessels and have found about 30 different types of GPS receivers, but none of them calculated the Rhumbline Distance accurately. I found 7 GPS methods of Distance calculation and three of them were Rhumbline Distance methods. If GPS receiver doesn't give the True Rhumbline Distance, then GPS receiver information (except the GPS position) is not correct, like distance, course, etc. Of course, differences, e.g. in distances are small, but not insignificant: between Miami and Charleston 2 N.miles, between San Francisco and SE Australia more than 15 N.miles, between Philippine and Panama more than 40 N.miles. Whoever has a GPS receiver may use simple Tables from my book (Differences in GPS Rhumbline Distances) to see how much the GPS Distance differs from the True Rhumbline Distance. The price of the book is US$50.00 including packing and postage expenses. Brown's Nautical Almanac (www.skipper.co.uk) has plenty information about this topic. I believe it has come time for GPS Receiver Data Surveying.

Subject: Dangerous Bulk Cargoes

Author:
Nicki Smith
[Edit]

Date Posted: 02:04:32 04/28/04 Wed

I have just received a message from the Cargoes and Ship Port Interface Manager of Canada who is a member of the working group on the revision of the BC Code which I have chaired for 5 years now. I request your help because the following information need urgent further research and consideration:

1) M.V. YTHAN suffered four rapid hatch explosions on 28 February 2004 resulting in six deaths and the sinking of the vessel approximately 30 minutes after the first explosion. It seems that a "burp" was first heard in hold # 1, then a massive explosion followed in hold # 5 making the Engine Room bulkhead collapse and killing 5 crew members in the E/R control room. This was followed by explosion in holds # 3 and # 4. The master was on deck at the time and was killed by a hatch cover from hold # 4.

2) M.V. SWIFT FAIR arrived at Shanghai 5/6 February 2004 and following the assistance of a fire expert and mechanical ventilation, the hydrogen gas levels were
brought under control. The vessel had high LEL percentages during the entire voyage.

3) M.V. CALIFORNIA suffered multiple hatch explosions on 28 August 2003. The damaged vessel made port in Almeria, Spain. Two crew were injured.

All three vessels were loaded at Palua, Venezuela.
All three vessels were chartered by the same company.
All three vessels had loaded a cargo described with various trade names:
- COMSIGUA Metallized Fine (HBI Fine)
- Hot Briquetted Iron Fine
- HBI Fine
- Finos de Briquetas de Orinoco Iron
- REMET Fines (HBI)
- Metalic HBI Fines
- REMET Fines (Orinoco Iron)
- Orinoco Iron REMET Fines
None of these names appear in either the BC or IMDG Codes.
This product should not be confused with either HBI or DRI.
The best description for this cargo is dust. For the most part it is all fines, like a very small diameter black sand. It is the byproduct of the manufacturing process of HBI and the handling of the briquettes and is usually
collected and stowed outside near the loading berth.
Both DRI (BC Code 015) and HBI (BC Code 016) physical property descriptions note they must have less than 5% fines.
Through an exothermic reaction this product appears to rapidly produce a large quantity of hydrogen gas with a very small moisture content and is thus capable of developing a sudden self ignition. Moreover, the gas explosion could also lead to a dust explosion.

It would also be useful to know about the shipper's declaration and the instructions and procedures on board these three ships.

Date Posted: 15:50:35 09/09/03 Tue

I have purchased a Sherlog ultrasound system to be usedfor Airborne Ultrasonic inspections.

This can be done in conjunction with your survey, allowing you to submit the report under your headings, giving you the ability to offer ultrasound as either part of your services or independently. I do this because I really want to pay for this thing fast! It was un-Godly expensive.

The SDT Sherlog is type approved (Lloydfs Register, ABS and Hellinic Register), and proven efficient and reliable as a testing system for verification of marine, offshore and industrial weathertightness. This equipment can also be used to test bulkheads or any openings on board which need to be sealed, such as refrigerated provisions stores and machinery spaces. It can be used efficiently to test and monitor the tightness of hatch covers, RoRo, barges, equipment such as bow doors, stern doors, visor doors, side doors, inner doors as well as ramps and many other shipboard areas.

If you are interested please contact me.

Subject: SOLAS and MCA vessel classification

Author:
Ian Wilkins
[Edit]

Date Posted: 06:06:52 08/23/02 Fri

Triggered by some worried phonecalls from English clients and from the article on page 61 of the latest Yachting World, I spent the whole daylooking into this SOLAS issue, mainly on the MCA website, plus IMO and our Dutch Shipping Inspectorate and ministry.

One thing that confuses me is:
The definition of , and more, the difference between a: SHIP VESSEL - PLEASURE VESSEL PASSENGER VESSEL SAILING SHIP.
e.g. what is the difference between a CLASS XI and a CLASS XII vessel, other than the means of propulsion in case of a M.Y.?

Some of these SOLAS requirements apply to ANY ³SHIPS², but then do they mean any boat that is Classified by the MCA(so somewhere in CLASS 1 CLASS D ?
(so only yachts >45 ft) or indeed ANY 27 ft-er going out ?

Furthermore, the YW article says IMO/SOLAS has brought the rules down to yacht-level, but in the MCA site and from our Dutch org¹s I understand it is the MCA as national administrational body, who have taken things from the
150 tonnes + ships towards yachts. (see
http://www.mcga.gov.uk/publications/SITE/safetyofnavigation/regulations/regulation01.htm )

Who can shed a light on this ? It probably has to do with me only half understanding the English language and it¹s subtle differences in wording but who can help me out.

If it all indeed is IMO/SOLAS regulated and indeed all pleasure yachts are effected, the implications are enormous ! specially if things go wrong !

Understand that receivers of cold rolled steel coils insist on having coils covered - or rather sealed in - as stowed
by arranging sort of plastic tent on top. This would stop condensation damage since low temperatures will remain under the plastic cover and thus act as a "fridge" when sailing from cold climat to warm climat, say from -20degC to +20degC.
Would appreciate comments on above and if any experience on arrival condition of cargo covered as descibed.

Date Posted: 09:03:15 03/30/02 Sat

My young practice is developing in the workboat [uninspected] segment of the US market. By way of establishing standards in this virtually un-regulated market, it is necessary to reference the ambigous term "good marine practice".

The US towing industry has instituted The Responsible Carrier Program [RCP]which is a safety management system similar to an infant ISM. The RCP has provision for internal and external auditing. These standards are helpful in the survey of towing vessels, however, the fishing industry has no accepted similar program or standards.

Fortunately, the US Coast Guard has referenced the Torremolinos Convention as "accepted guidelines" for fishing industry standards. On the down-side, it is difficult to apply international standards to a generally un-sophisticated and independantly operated industry.

My intent is include reasonable international standards under the "good marine practice" standard. I am also a panel member/sub-group leader of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers [SNAME], Ad Hoc Panel 12 [Fishing Vessel Safety]. I intend to include proposed standards under the forementioned term during the SNAME work as well.

In both survey practice and SNAME work, it is necessary to become expert in the area of "good marine practice" or "accepted industry standards", and I would like to respectfully solicit insight, reference material and/or corrospondence from the members regarding these terms.

With Kind Regards,

Michael
