“Most of the attacks on UBF ministry have been based either on blatant racial prejudice against Koreans or misunderstandings of their culture.”

UBF played the race card. This is ironic because UBF always prays for white sheep, often called North American sheep. My chapter director barely noticed nonwhites except for the summer when the student population on campus decreased rapidly. Sam Lee even wanted the ‘other’ (nonwhite) sheep to decrease. UBF is blatantly racist.

If we who joined UBF were blatantly racist, we would not have spent so many years there. If someone is prejudice against Koreans and they enter a church full of Koreans, they will not come back. Spiritual abuse is the reason for ‘attacks on UBF ministry.' The 'attacks' are justified.

Later, UBF states that they are trying to obey the Bible and teach students to do so also. If they are teaching obedience to the Bible, then why is culture an issue? Are not missionaries supposed to adapt to the culture of the mission field to which they are called? Sarah Barry was praised by Lee for eating gimchi and generally living like a Korean. UBF Koreans do not even follow their founder’s example. Instead, they impose Korean culture upon natives and pull Bible verses out of context to justify themselves.

“And most of the reports about UBF have been an assembly and rehashing of all of the above, with little or no further investigation.”

Incorrect! Most of the reports about UBF have been new groups of people exposed to the same abuse. Until UBF repents, more abused victims will be exposed to the public.

“The people in this group are mostly former UBF members who are angry and bitter at us for various reasons.”

Various reasons such as coerced abortions, arranged marriage and divorce, alienation from family, friends, and former churches, human-centered abusive training, absolute obedience to men training, imposition of numbers doctrine, and imposing a works doctrine over the grace of Jesus. Many of us are angry and bitter because of this. Not angry and bitter at individuals, but angry and bitter because of the terrible unrepentant sins committed by the ministry we thought was sincerely preaching the gospel.

“These are people we loved dearly, respected, and in some cases, worked closely with.”

The love was conditional upon absolute obedience to the leaders. I was not respected during my nearly eight years in UBF. Respect in UBF is a one-way street. Sheep respect their shepherds. Shepherds have no respect for sheep.

“Of course, we are all humans, we make mistakes. We sin. But we try to live by faith in the grace of God and we try to obey him.”

UBF leaders justify themselves as being humans who make mistakes. At the same time the common shepherds must repent endlessly in a public forum for every sin, whether real or imagined by our shepherds.

This statement typifies the problem in UBF. “We sin. But we try to live by faith in the grace of God.” UBF ignores the grace of God. UBF thinks that sin will be overcome by being more faithful and more obedient. Practically, this means doing more UBF activities such as fishing, testimony writing, daily bread, feeding more sheep, and being trained by your shepherd. UBF preaches a gospel of overcoming sin by doing more work. The gospel clearly states that sins are overcome only through the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross and resurrection three days later. Victory over sin comes from repenting before Christ and leaving our sins at the cross. Thus, we receive God’s grace.

“We identify ourselves with the larger body of Christ throughout the world.”

Then why was I told that I had to choose between UBF and my parents’ church. Perhaps our churches could have worked together as members of the larger body of Christ.. In truth, UBF only wants their members to isolate themselves in UBF so that they will be more easily abused and manipulated throughout their lives.

I feel a sense of de ja vu. These statements have been made by many people about UBF before. The truth is worth repeating. I may keep repeating the truth about UBF as long as the Lord allows.

In Christ,

PECAS
