Subject: Re: Brainwashing, Manipulation;the APA and DSM-IV
In reply to: fellow christian 's message, "Brainwashing, Manipulation; The other side of the medal" on 07:32:13 05/14/04 Fri

fellow christian, just a few points

1. Everything you read on the internet is not true...

2. The APA does recognize the term Thought Reform, as evidenced by the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) which is published by the American Psychiatric Association. This APA publication cites thought reform as a contributing factor to “Dissociative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified” (a diagnosis frequently given to former cult members).

3. The DSM-III (300.15) noted the synonyms for Thought Reform "brainwashing and coercive persuasion" as a contributing factor to “Dissociative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified” .

Therefore I just put a dandy of a hole in your position. Nice effort, but you're gonna have to do better than that to find something that can't be counteracted with facts and truth.

Waitaminute...why not look up Dr. Robert Jay Lifton's essay on "Thought Reform and the Nuclear Age", which is the classic study of Thought Reform on POW's during the Korean War? Then again, it is detrimental to the UBF methodology.

Regards
Joey
