"magical thinking" and faith are two separate things, but as you have shown they are often confused in UBF.

I think the biggest example of "magical thinking" is in present members handling of the history of UBF abuse. People seem to think that if they just study and teach the Bible more then the issue will go away or it is somehow resolved. It seems related to thought stopping techniques.

I think "magical thinking" is also related to Romans chapter 1 where Paul discusses people exchanging the truth of God for a lie. Sometimes it is quite comforting to believe in a lie. In the UBF case, the lie is that somehow the leader knows what is best for me, and that if I trust and obey them enough then that is God's will.

Personal faith on the other hand means struggling with the truth of God personally and making personal decisions before God to obey him.

Lies can be comforting, but they are still lies. Throughout history, the more desperate the situation, the more people turn to lies.
