The July 6, 2001 "Daily Bread" on 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 presents a typically distorted view of Christian marriage which may explain many divorces in UBF.
Here's what the Bible says (NIV):
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?" - 2 Co 6:14-15
Here's what Samuel Lee & Sarah Barry say:
"A yoke is a piece of wood that fits over the neck of two oxen, enabling them to pull a load together. If we deliberately bind ourselves to a person with worldly priorities and values, we cannot please God. If
one marries a person whose goals in life are different from his own, the yoke that should make the burden easier makes it unbearably heavy."
The passage (2 Co 6:14-15) clearly distinguishes between believers and unbelievers, and doesn't even mention marriage. But Lee/Barry seem to see a need to apply this to a marriage, and this leads to all kinds of problems. It doesn't seem to matter to them whether husband or wife or both in the marriage are believers. Their message: Being yoked with someone whose goals are different is an unbearable burden. So if a spouse -- even a believing spouse -- tires of UBF or comes to realize that UBF is cultic, i.e. they become "worldly" in the eyes of UBF, we now have a clash of goals, priorities and values that becomes an unbearable burden. The fruit of such a false teaching we have seen too often in UBF.
