One thing that recently came to my mind is that cult members are definitely capable of thinking in terms of "gray", i.e. "we have our own share of faults, but who cares, just look at the faults that others have..." - this is NOT black and white, but definitely a "grayscale" categorization with a filter (everything above the limit we set = white, everything below = black).

I don't fully understand it, though - it's beyond my comprehension on how a person can see another person's "light gray" as "black" when their own "dark gray" is supposedly "white". Of course, that leads us back to the problems of relativism and selective perception, but I really don't understand on how a person can argue away a proven case of rape while at the same time condemning others for sexually inappropriate clothing...
