Dear Nick;

I wanted to add this moment in our walk down memory lane.

I met Sarah Barry's parent's on several occasions. The first time was at the Summer Conference in the early '80's. They were very quiet and simple people. Their manner was typical for elderly folk from the south at that time. Very charming to everyone. Mr. Barry walked with a cane, but otherwise both appeared to be in fairly good health.

After I returned to Toledo from staying with Sarah Barry, I heard from Missionary James Kim that Sarah Barry's parent's home in Mississippi had been broken into while they were in the home. Two black males, entered the home, ransacked it and found less than $100.00 in cash. They tied Mr. Barry up in a chair, and raped Mrs. Barry. After that, both of the Barry's were beaten and left for dead. I remember being told that the neighborhood the Barry's lived in was on the decline as developers were building up newer area's for folk's to live. The poorer area's became more susceptible to crime.

Anyway, we all prayed for Sarah Barry's parent's and took up a collection to send to them. Both were hospitalized for quite some time and I remember after that most Korean missionaries discouraged the "fishing" of black students.

Sarah Barry stayed in Mississippi for at least a month or more, and I saw her parents at the following year's summer conference. They were more frail in appearence and I don't recall seeing them smile or greet folks as they had done in the past (understandable since they had been through a major trauma.)

Best wishes,
Desiree
